PS3 set to deliver worldwide daily news
More from the PlayStation Business Review in Tokyo. According to this PS3 Attitude piece, Sony’s announced a service that will allow PS3 owners to view daily world news interactively.
The system, billed under the firm’s just-announced Life with PlayStation brand, allows you to zoom around a virtual globe and gain world news from various cities.
At a later date, the service will allow later on for geo-tagged pictures to be viewed on the globe, and is part of a whole slew of non-game services Sony are planning for the future.
More through the link.

This is what happens when the other parts of Sony have too much input into the gaming division.

If they’d put all this fucking money into tying up some exclusives they might’ve actually been getting somewhere.

Isn’t this what the Wii has?
I agree with the above, make some great games!
Although they did say they wanted the PS3 to be a ‘multimedia hub’.

Though… it’s not hard to see why Phil bailed.

Because Atari offered him a big fat wad of cold hard cash?

I think it’s clear that the division was not going in the direction he wanted it to go. He indicated some of his frustration at the time (Sony not understanding the importance of casual games etc).
Does Atari actually have any cash to offer people?

Companies in trouble can ALWAYS find huge pots of cash to hire pointless over-priced executives. Usually around six months before they go bust.

i’d like geo tagged photos on a rotating news globe… if some of the photos were of ‘The Getaway’ launch!!!

“Isn’t this what the Wii has?”
Yes, but I think Nintendo just might have copied it from somewhere else……yes?

Er, Phil was in charge so it would be his fault.

@Blerks desperate cry for games: It now looks like MGS4 did sweet fuck all for the PS3. This news service might actually have a bigger impact.
OK I don’t really believe that, but you can’t blame them for trying. It’s the old chicken and hen. Why would devs release exclusives (exclusives SCE can’t afford to pay for anyway) when there is such a small installbase. Look at Lego Indy stomping away on all the formats.
Tareting just one of the clunky consoles isn’t good enough. Shit, people even cry wolfe when GTAIV ‘only’ managed to sell 9 million in one month.
Squeenix don’t look too eager to release FFXIII until there are more than 12 potential buyers.

Sony have got the games wrong but it’s not lack of money/investment – it’s bad choices and management. Phil didn’t walk, he was pushed. Seriously this sort of thing isn’t affecting the games, management of the games is the fault.
How much does it really cost them to put this sort of thing together? Very little – that sort of money is going to have very little impact in the games area. This is effectively a funky front end to a web page.
