Some common sense at last. Which have sold more: PS3s in Tunisia, Jordan et al or RRoD replacement 360s in the UK, France et al? There you go….

Plus, Sony are on record (early 2006 I think it was) as saying that all their published figures are sold to customer and not shipped to retailer – unless overtly stated otherwise. With MS, we still get figures which later turn out to be shipped not sold.

Shh, you’ll upset the Nintendo fanboys who like to wipe the PS2 from history. Nintendo can only dream of those numbers. At the rate that the PS2 is STILL selling it would take the Wii about 15 years to catch up……

Anyway, I call the Wii as winner THS.

“Recently we posted a story featuring comments from both Sony and Microsoft about who’s winning the console battle in Europe. Interestingly, both companies seemed to claim the lead in the region, but upon closer inspection it appears that the confusion – as we suspected – stems from how Sony defines Europe.

As was stated in the previous story, for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the region is actually defined by “the whole of Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia.”

GameDaily BIZ has now heard back from Microsoft and it’s clear that their definition of Europe is much more straightforward.

“The issue of Europe comes through a difference in defining what Europe represents. Microsoft defines Europe as just Europe, whereas Sony defines Europe as the whole of Europe, Africa, Middle East and Russia. Microsoft counts 22 countries total for Europe and we count sold through units only, where we count the number of units sold through to consumers. Sony includes PAL countries within their definition of Europe and sold in units, where they count the number of units sold to retailers,” a spokesperson said.

So who’s really winning Europe? Well in terms of installed base, and going by Microsoft’s definition, it seems that the Xbox 360 does indeed have the lead, thanks in part to a recent price drop and a sales bump from the release of GTA IV. That said, the Sony brand has historically been very strong in Europe and with hot titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet in the pipeline, Microsoft will have a tough fight on its hands in a region that it’s admitted is a “swing territory.”"

Sony sold about TWICE as many consoles in the same timeframe as M$!

But just look at the numbers of 360 vs. PS3 sold in Spain, France and Italy!

And let me remind all of you that the 360 is 1,5 years longer on the market than the PS3, so PS3 has won the war by far already.

Sony not only include Russia, but also Africa and the Middle East in their definition of Europe.

Stupid, but true.

Also, the fact that the PS3 is close to the 360 in terms of sales is nothing special by any means.

Don’t forget that in some countries like Italy and France, you can pretty much use the word Playstation and games console interchangably. If Sony took advantage of the market share that they had with the PS2, they should really have been millions upon millions of units ahead in Europe by now but they’re very far from it.

I’m sure by both their own criteria, each is correct.

Either way, 360 has been on sale for close to a year and a half longer than PS3 in Europe, so the fact that they’re as close as they are is pretty damning for MS.

patlike: One of them needs to release the GFK / Chart Track data. That would be excellent for a bunch of reasons.
