360 ahead of PS3 in Europe, says Gosen
Speaking to MCV, Microsoft’s David Gosen has claimed that Xbox 360 is ahead of PS3 in Europe in terms of unit sales, despite Sony claiming the contrary.
“Anyone trying to call a winner this Christmas is calling too early,” he told MCV. “We are incredibly well positioned – our installed base in Europe is well over five million and contrary to what’s been reported we are at least, if not more than, three quarters of a million ahead of PS3.
“If we look at the momentum in the business in the last few months, the trajectory has changed significantly. My only message to the analysts is to check their numbers.”
Sony claimed to have the lead in Europe with PS3 at its London PlayStation Day event in May.

Why do I have visions of a Nintendo exec chuckling to himself before going for a swim in his money pit?

Bit silly, innit. David Reeves and David Gosen having a fight is a ridiculous concept.

Not if it was a real fight. Bare-chested and bare-knuckled. To the death.
I wonder how many of those 5 million units were replacements for RRODed consoles?

That would be genuinely amazing.
This whole thing really is stupid, though. Without concrete figure they can just call each other liars until we die of boredom.

Blerk: Well… you’d have to be a bit silly to buy a replacement rather than use the 3 year warranty. Ask the same question in a year though.
patlike: One of them needs to release the GFK / Chart Track data. That would be excellent for a bunch of reasons.

Psycho, I know LOADS of people from EG who’ve bought new 360s to replace RRODed ones. Machine busts, send it to MS, get it repaired, trade it in at GAME against an HDMI arcade (keeping your old HDD). That said, there must be someone somewhere who’s buying all those second-hand 360s.

Swings and roundabouts really. I’m pretty sure I read that Sony include Russia in their definition of Europe, and then there’s the shipped vs sold definition.
I’m sure by both their own criteria, each is correct.
Either way, 360 has been on sale for close to a year and a half longer than PS3 in Europe, so the fact that they’re as close as they are is pretty damning for MS.

I suppose if you want to grab a HDMI machine instead it makes sense.

Sony not only include Russia, but also Africa and the Middle East in their definition of Europe.
Stupid, but true.
Also, the fact that the PS3 is close to the 360 in terms of sales is nothing special by any means.
Don’t forget that in some countries like Italy and France, you can pretty much use the word Playstation and games console interchangably. If Sony took advantage of the market share that they had with the PS2, they should really have been millions upon millions of units ahead in Europe by now but they’re very far from it.

I’m well aware that some of the numbers at VGChartz.com are estimates.
But just look at the numbers of 360 vs. PS3 sold in Spain, France and Italy!
And let me remind all of you that the 360 is 1,5 years longer on the market than the PS3, so PS3 has won the war by far already.

I’m sure the PS3 will win the “war” in Europe (but not by as much as I originally thought it would), but it’s far too early to call a win yet.

Hardware Sales From Launch (Europe):

Sony sold about TWICE as many consoles in the same timeframe as M$!

Yes, I agree. The CW-wars are not over yet and M$ still has a chance to do better.

oh man…
Stupid comment moderation thingy…
“Do Microsoft include all those countries in their definition of Europe, though?”
Nope.
(from Gamedaily)
“Recently we posted a story featuring comments from both Sony and Microsoft about who’s winning the console battle in Europe. Interestingly, both companies seemed to claim the lead in the region, but upon closer inspection it appears that the confusion – as we suspected – stems from how Sony defines Europe.
As was stated in the previous story, for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the region is actually defined by “the whole of Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia.”
GameDaily BIZ has now heard back from Microsoft and it’s clear that their definition of Europe is much more straightforward.
“The issue of Europe comes through a difference in defining what Europe represents. Microsoft defines Europe as just Europe, whereas Sony defines Europe as the whole of Europe, Africa, Middle East and Russia. Microsoft counts 22 countries total for Europe and we count sold through units only, where we count the number of units sold through to consumers. Sony includes PAL countries within their definition of Europe and sold in units, where they count the number of units sold to retailers,” a spokesperson said.
So who’s really winning Europe? Well in terms of installed base, and going by Microsoft’s definition, it seems that the Xbox 360 does indeed have the lead, thanks in part to a recent price drop and a sales bump from the release of GTA IV. That said, the Sony brand has historically been very strong in Europe and with hot titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet in the pipeline, Microsoft will have a tough fight on its hands in a region that it’s admitted is a “swing territory.”"

What is most impressive about PS3 figures is that the 360 clearly has the PS3 beaten in quite a number of areas yet PS3 has still done so well. That must be a concern to MS – that they really aren’t ahead as much as they should be -considering the cock ups Sony has made, and how well they have learned from the original XBox in terms of software breadth & depth.

Given the game is to make money… Nintendo are the winner. Hell, the others aren’t even in the same race.

Some common sense at last. Which have sold more: PS3s in Tunisia, Jordan et al or RRoD replacement 360s in the UK, France et al? There you go….
Plus, Sony are on record (early 2006 I think it was) as saying that all their published figures are sold to customer and not shipped to retailer – unless overtly stated otherwise. With MS, we still get figures which later turn out to be shipped not sold.
“I call PS2 winner.”
Shh, you’ll upset the Nintendo fanboys who like to wipe the PS2 from history. Nintendo can only dream of those numbers. At the rate that the PS2 is STILL selling it would take the Wii about 15 years to catch up……

Surely this is just the way it works though? I mean, with the next generation of consoles, the market leader will sell at a faster pace than the Wii is currently doing.

@Psychotext – but the Wii hasn’t got a hope in hell of lasting 10 years. The PS2 has sold 130m. The Wii is at least 105m behind and selling about 16m a year at present. Reckon the Wii will be on sale and selling big numbers in seven years time?

That’s really hard to say, actually. I can’t see the Wii still selling like this in 5 years time, but you never really know. I wouldn’t put it past it.

I already own two Wii’s, I’m not sure I’d buy a black one.
But that’s depressingly true, morriss. I think my Malibu Stacy comparison before was good.
