I'm a graphic designer...this is either a joke or some 'inside psp in-game trophy' screen. No way Sony brings something like this out to put in 'Home' and compete with Microsoft. I know Sony has totally screwed the pooch with the PS3, but nobody is this damn dumb...

"Turn on the 360
press right (games blade)
press down (highlight Games Library option)
press A (enter Games Library)
press A (enter My Games list)
Select a game from the list."

Once selected you still need to say I want to play it rather than delete it or recommend it to someone ;).

When you've got lots of stuff on the PS3 you can categorize them yourself. Then group by Album. So I current sort the games into Demos, Full Games, Eyetoy and PSOne - but it's flexible how you want to group.

I'm not claiming it's difficult to use, just badly designed.

Yeah, but it's not only about buttons, is it?

If you've got 100 demos, and 100 games on your hard drive, how do you find the on that you want that begins with 'M'?

It's not just about how many buttons you press, but how long it takes and how organised/simple it is to use.

And not to nit-pick, but scrolling involves presses too you know.

Anyway, the comparison is silly tbh, because they're both so easy to use, that even a 3 year old can use them to play the games that they want.

both work just fine, and I prefer the look of PSN, but I've never found myself complaining about the blade system since they updated it ages ago.

So aside from scrolling only <b>ONE</b> button has to be pressed to play any game on PS3!!!
Now, that's what I call good GUI-design!

On PS3:
1. scroll right to games-icon.
(after this first step you <b>already</b> see the game you want to play, if your list is not to long)
2. scroll down to game you want to play.
3. press "X"

So for comparison. How many button presses to load a game on the PS3? (Assuming it's one in your list rather than one you've played recently).

Turn on the 360
press right (games blade)
press down (highlight Games Library option)
press A (enter Games Library)
press A (enter My Games list)
Select a game from the list.

The majority of time here was between waiting for the 360 intro animation and deciding which game to choose.

It's the 360 on my desk at work, so there are only a few demo's and trials on it (20 in all). But I have a 120gb hard drive at home which has loads of stuff on it and runs just as fast as this one.

It's really not all that complicated. Certainly no more complicated than turning on your PC, loading up a browser and going to a website.

In any case, I'm sure that most people play DVD based games, which you can make start up as soon as you boot up if you so choose.

Anyway the point is that the blades system isn't perfect by any means, but it is very functional, and it has been designed by a software company who have been developing GUI's for a good long while.

It does manage to do the job of making itself look simple, even though it's actually very, very complicated.

Depends on number of games you've got on you HD and whether you've played the game last or not. It does take those steps to play a random game on a system with a regular amount of stuff on it though.

Just run me through the steps you needed to do to play Sensible Soccer then? How many games do you have on your list?

"<i>Consider what you need to do to play a game you’ve downloaded on the 360. Boot-up, Switch to Games Blade, Select My Games Library, Switch to right sub-category, Wait an obscene amount of time for the 360 to list a directories contents, Select your game, Then say yes I’d like to play this please. 7 steps. To play a game! Who the feck designed that?</i>"

Not quite.

I just loaded up a trial version of Sensible Soccer in about 10 seconds. Thats from boot up.

It's not really all that difficult, now is it...?

I think we will see both: levels & different metals (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) of trophies.

Yep I like the implications Psychotext sums up too. I don't care about a score but an indication of how tricky what you did was is good.

Also chalk another one up for liking XMB - particularly in comparison to the clunky blades on the 360. It's clean, crisp and most of all usable. I love the themes being able to change icons and sounds too.

The Blades on 360 are a nice enough idea but brash and poorly implemented. Consider what you need to do to play a game you've downloaded on the 360.
Quiiick: You think it's going to work that way... or could it possibly be that trophies have different difficulties (Platinum being the hardest). I think I'd prefer that way as it actually differentiates from the 360 system by giving you something to show that you've beaten the hardest challenges.

This may have been covered in the link... but I didn't read it because at this stage it's all rumour and speculation.

How crap.

Sony can't even rip off achievements without messing it up!

When are they going to realise that they'd sell a lot more consoles if they focused on an actual next-gen gaming experience rather than redundant next-gen hardware??

This looks like something I'd have expected to see on the PS1!

I like the idea of having levels in addition to the trophies. And for every next higher level to reach you need more trophies. Much better implementation then the gamer-score on the 360.

But to be honest: I think either system destroys somewhat the pleasure to play a game. I'm not interested in competition in games and I also never play online.

Gaming for me is all about playing trough a good story-driven single-player campaign.

I like the idea of having levels in addition to the trophies. And for every next higher level to reach you need more trophies. Much better implementation then the gamer-score on the 360.

But to be honest: I think either system destroys somewhat the pleasure to play a game. I’m not interested in competition in games and I also never play online.

The aim of the XMB is to be similar across all Sony products, so it was a very intentional decision to have the PS3 XMB be similar to the PSP's. Good design practice, too. ;-)

I'm hoping that's just an early mockup. It looks like it was done by an intern in half hour at lunch time.

In comparison to the Xbox Dash the XMB's not bad, but fucksake they could've come up with something a little tastier than what we'd already seen on the PSP...

"And the XMB doesn’t?"
No it doesn't IMO. It's rather a nicely-designed interface...unlike the Fisher-Price looking blades system on Live.
