May NPD: PS3 outsells 360, Wii nearly beats 360 install base
Wii and DS contined to destroy the competition in American hardware sales in May, selling well in excess of 1 million units between them last month.
PS3 outsold Xbox 360, despite Michael Pachter’s prediction that the situation would be reversed. The news will comes as a blow to Microsoft, who had banked on GTA IV moving hardware for the firm. Full list below.
- Wii – 675,100
- Nintendo DS – 452,600
- PlayStation 3 – 208,700
- Xbox 360 – 186,600
- PSP – 182,300
- PS2 – 132,000
The data also shows that Wii’s install base in America has now hit 10.2 million units, and looks set to easily pass 360′s 10.27 million console sales next month.

I think I’ve figured it out! Whatever Pachter says, the reverse happens!

Genuine LOL at Patcher getting it wrong again. I’m sure he’ll come out with a statement saying something along the lines of.. “we underestimated the long tail appeal of GTA4 on PS3… ” but it’s all just hot air.
I think in future, analysts predictions really should be discounted as news of any sort.

PS3 all the way in June. I reckon that PS3 bump was off the back of GTA, and MGS just came out. I reckon 360′s going to be looking very timid this time next month.

Yeah, it’s clear that the PS3 is going to get a significant bump next month. 80gb return should do that on its own.

Yep. It’s looking a bit shaky for MS, I reckon. I think Blerk’s right about a price cut. They need to do something sharpish, or E3′s going to be all eyes on them to make some kind of mental move to save the day.

Weird how much branding effects people.

patlike: Like I said in the other thread… MS has dropped the 360 £25 in the US since launch. They’ve still got a lot to play with but they’re clearly focussed on profit rather than marketshare.

Hmm, branding, spectacular and desperate… Maybe they’ll buy Sega! That couldn’t possibly go wrong.
