Square Enix just announced that RPG Last Remnant will be first released on Xbox 360, worldwide, this winter. The game will also hit PS3, but no date has been given for the other version.

More details have been promised for E3 next month.

A trailer for the game has also been shown, which will apparently appear on XBLM today. It’s unclear whether or not this is going to be worldwide or just in Japan.

The company gave the details at the Microsoft’s ongoing Xbox 360 RPG Premiere 2008 event in Tokyo.

As a JRPG fan this is all a bit overwhelming!

  2. patlike said:

Fucking JRPG overload. They have a new home, clearly.

  3. Blerk said:

This is the one I’m least convinced about. Would like to see a bit more of it.

  4. morriss said:

    Nice tag-line, Pat. ;)

Now all MS Japan needs to do is change the name of their console to something like “Nintendo” and it’s away we go!

  5. patlike said:

This does all mean that if you’re seriously into JRPGs you’re going to have to buy everything now. Console armageddon.

  6. Psychotext said:

Well… that’s assuming FFXIII ends up being any good (OMG I said it!). What’s the Wii getting?

  7. patlike said:

    Tales of Symphonia, innit.

  8. Blerk said:

It’s pretty much a complete fucking disaster as far as I’m concerned. It’s hard to imagine how it could’ve been any worse.

  9. Psychotext said:

    Ahh yes, forgot about ToS.

  10. patlike said:

Can you not get a 360 and a PS3, Blerk? Admittedly, that does add up to between 400 and 500 quid.

Jesus. I never thought of it like that.

  11. morriss said:

What’s on the PS3 atm. that you like anyway, Blerk? At the moment, at the moment.

  12. Blerk said:

I could get both, but I don’t want both – especially when they do almost exactly the same thing.

Every time I think I’ve decided which way I’m leaning, something happens which makes me look back at the other one. There’s no clear ‘winner’, so I just end up sitting on the fence some more. I was hoping things would be clearer by now, but if anything they’re just getting worse.

I might just not bother at all. That’ll teach ‘em.

  13. Blerk said:

@morriss: mostly third-party stuff which is also on the 360, although there is Disgaea and MGS4. I like the look of lots of 360 games, but I’m hugely put off by the crappy hardware and the fact that everybody and their dog seems to be predicting doom and gloom for the machine in the near future. I can’t shake the feeling that I’d buy one and then everyone would suddenly jump ship and start doing PS3 stuff.

On the flip side of the coin, everyone seems to be taking an age to actually get the hang of the PS3, there are hardly any exclusives, Japan couldn’t give a fuck and I can’t shake the feeling that I’d buy one and then everyone would suddenly jump ship and start doing 360 stuff.

    Bollocks.

  14. patlike said:

To be honest, I think there’s no way you’re ever going to be satisfied with just one of them. There’s so much stuff on 360 now that I doubt you’re ever going to “regret” buying one, and PS3’s just a no-brainer, or at least it will be in six month’s time. Neither one of them is ever going to have everything, and I can’t see developers jumping ship for either one. GTA was a good indicator of that.

For me, it’s Team ICO that’s really holding me to the intention to get a PS3 – one day. Their next game and MGS4. I would have added Final Fantasy to that list but Square need to prove themselves again after XII was such a let down.

The only other big factor is that most of the 360’s best games eventually make it over to the PC anyway, although that’s not an option for everyone.

Things were much easier when the PS2 ruled the world…

  16. Blerk said:

The thing with the 360 is that I’m pretty much not bothered about most of its exclusive titles outside of the few RPGs that its managed to hoover up. I really couldn’t give a shit about Halol or Splinter Cell or any of that stuff.

I was sort of expecting Sony to provide a better ‘mix’ of stuff, a bit less testosterone-heavy than Microsoft’s offering, but so far it’s been pretty much MS-style shooty-shooty or Nintendo-style throw-away-casual, neither of which are very appealing either.

If everything that appears from now on is on both platforms then that’s all well and good and I’ll buy a PS3 because the hardware’s not as shonky. But it’s far from clear that that’s what’s going to happen. So here I am. No better off than I was six months ago. Six or seven months to go, guys. Convince me.

  17. Psychotext said:

Blerk: Get both… but persuade yourself that you really bought a PS3 for a blu-ray player.

As for the 360, I wouldn’t worry about it. 360 owners buy far too much software for it to lose support and it’s selling better now than it ever did in the past. Hardware isn’t an issue these days either.

  18. patlike said:

Ja, the new 360s are much better than the first ones. To be honest, though, I’ve had mine from launch and nothing’s ever gone wrong with it.

In terms of software support, PT’s so right: there’s no way support’s going to drop now from any of the major publishers. I use my 360 all the time, and I’ve never even played Halo 3 or a Clancy game on it.

  19. Blerk said:

It might sound odd, but the ‘crash and burn’ of the hardware doesn’t worry me quite as much as the fact that it sounds like a fucking lawnmower. I play pretty much all my games at night after everyone else has gone to bed, so I have the sound turned down pretty low. And the 360 is REALLY noisy, so I’d probably have to use headphones, which means I can’t listen out for waking kids.

As for Blu-Ray… I can’t even remember the last time I watched a DVD, so Blu-Ray isn’t really much of a selling point. :-)

  20. patlike said:

Aren’t the new ones quieter? You’re right, though: mine sounds like a Harrier jumpjet.

  21. morriss said:

As I said before, playing on the 360 is like living next to a train station. The first week or so you can hear nothing else, but after a while you barely notice it! :D

  22. Psychotext said:

Sound levels still depend on luck. Mine is quiet (relatively), but my friend bought one a couple of weeks back which is louder.

Still no-where near as loud as the original hoover versions though.

  23. Blerk said:

My friend’s Elite sounds like a rocket taking off. I thought it might’ve been improved in the later models but apparently not.

  24. ecu said:

I already own all the consoles, so I don’t care what machine they end up on, but it’s really strange that the 360 is getting them all. Are they all moneyhatted? I don’t know they’re still trying to take Japan, because it doesn’t seem to be working (sales will spike for the week, then it’ll go back to selling 5,000) and I think it’s beyond saving. The PS3 on the other hand, I think will end up just like the PSP did, over a similar time scale. The 360 does seem like an odd choice for these games.

  25. Blerk said:

I’m so depressed about it all that I’ve actually been working this afternoon.

SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO, SONY AND MICROSOFT? I hope you’re happy now.

  26. patlike said:

Buy a 360! You may as well. They play great games and sound like tractors.

  27. Blerk said:

I might. Or I might not.
