Greenberg: Live Marketplace is Wal-Mart, PSN is Quickie Mart

Microsoft’s current rent-a-quote, Xbox director of product management Aaron Greenberg, has confirmed that there are now more than 17,000 pieces of content on the Xbox Live Marketplace in the US, and has claimed the figure means the service is as Wal-Mart is to a local Quickie Mart when compared to PlayStation Network.

“We’re at 17,000: the PlayStation Network is just around 600 items,” he said. “This is like comparing a Wal-Mart superstore or a Cost-Co to your local Quickie Mart, right? It’s at extreme ends… In the first year we had more than 600 items. We were way ahead of that.”

Greenberg, speaking in the latest Major Nelson podcast, also mentioned figures for Wii’s online offering.

“I think the Wii the last time we checked is at about 200 items or so,” he added. “They don’t have storage, right? I mean, they have internal but they don’t have a hard drive or anything.”

The Major clarified that the 17,000 figure includes GamerPics, TV shows and everything else on the service, just in the US.

I recently watched a documentary on the Wal-Mart empire. The policies and practices used by them are shocking.

This Greenberg guy seems to act more like a forum troll than a spokesperson and, to me, seems to typify the 360’s perceived ‘alpha-male’ core demographic. Chest-beating, flag waving, “USA! USA!” mantra-chanting digital jingoism.

I can’t say I care for him or the way he promotes his products much. Maybe if I was an America frat-boy I’d enjoy it more.

I preferred Peter Moore. He managed to make press statements without sounding like a trolling idiot.

Hmmm - so Live marketplace == Asda - that’s what he’s saying? Classy.

The majority of the content on Xbox live is Themes, Gamer pics, and Movie and TV content. All of which they charge for and have little or nothing to do with gaming.

Sony will have Movie, TV and probably music content Very soon and when that happens there 16,400 item advantage will drop considerably and possibly have fewer items than PSN.

Charging for Themes and Gamer Pics is just stupid, and yes sometimes they give some of those away, there usually the ones based on cars, movies and hamburger joints…the advertising ones, the ones that microsoft is making advertizing money from.

This constent chest thumping by microsoft reps is getting kinda of anoying. This day in day out we are better than everyone else bull is bordering on obsessive, and makes them seem scared of the competition.

The majority of stuff on Live is XBLA titles and demos, surely.

Count for yourself. There’s about a 130 xbox live arcade tittles and if they had a demo for every game available for Xbox 360 (Which they don’t), that would be 370 counting Xbox live arcade games, add in game videos, I’ll say two for every game available, even though it’s probably much less. That would be 1240 XBLA tittles, demos, and game videos. Take that away from the 17,000 items they mention and that leaves 15,760 Movies, TV shows, Gamer pics, and Themes.

Well, I live in Europe so I haven’t got the movies. :)

Haha, what a load of BS.

Check out the EU marketplace to see what I mean.

    Fix it Microsoft.

    Uk xboxlive

No tv shows, loads of crappy music videos, 60 odd movies most of which are crap, xbla games only a small majority are worth buying the rest are crap, demo’s, on selected games downloadable content, theme’s and gamer pic’s. All for the price of £50 and all download like you were on a 56k modem.

Its good thing I only payed £25 for my gold membership its not even worth that.

Umm… kasai. The £50 you pay (lol, try more like £30, £35 if you’re stupid enough to pay retail) has nothing to do with all the things you listed. They’re all accessible to silver members.
