Rockstar had to stock Amazon with 40% of soundtrack before GTA IV’s launch
According to this Reuters piece, 40 percent of the GTA IV soundtrack had to be stocked by Rockstar itself on Amazon before GTA IV launched.
The game’s track listing – which is over 200 strong – was obviously too eclectic for the online retailer, which needed the help of the publisher to be able to offer the songs for sale. As Rockstar held the licenses to the music for the game, it had to make the effort to ensure all the music was available for sale on day one.
Well worth a read, that.

I think it has one of the best line-up of songs myself. LCHC, Tuff Gong, Liberty Rock and The Journey are all class.

It’s one of the best, yeah. The only reason people don’t like it, is because it doesn’t have the regular pop guff that they can sing along to.

Sorry but that ain’t the reason I don’t like it. The music in general is generic and unsatisfying. The radio DJ’s are pretty poor and hardly funny. Heck not even Lazlow. Best gta soundtrack Vice City full of great classics from rock to pop. Second to that is GTA 3 soundtrack. GTA 4 soundtrack is generic at best.
