Games that are 720p only: EA games, Motorstorm, Resitance etc. don't scale to 1080i, they downscale to 576 or 480p because the PS3 doesn't have an onboard scaler. The software itself has to support 1080i for it to happen.

Oh apparently it does - it's just not normally accessible to the devs or as good as the 360 one.

morriss: It's already scaling from 630p to 720p. This is no different.

This doesn't change the native resolution... it just means the PS3 is upscaling instead of your TV.

If you've got a 1080p TV then the output you are watching is always 1080p - it's just where the upscaling is done. It has 1080 pixels down the side, it can't just display 720p magically.

So if the PS3 chucks a 720p signal at it then the TV upscales to 1080p so it can display it. If the PS3 chucks a 1080p signal at it then the TV just displays the signal.

Doesn't this just mean the PS3 is upscaling from 640p to 1080p instead of the TV?
