How to run GTA IV at 1080p on a PS3
The resolution of the PS3 version of GTA IV’s been something of a hot banana this week (there was more to it in the end: apparently it runs at 640p, not 630p, but we figured life was too short), but TalkPlayStation.com reckons it’s easy enough to make the game run at 1080p, assuming you have the right TV, obviously.
Go to to the display option under settings
Select video output settings
Select HDMI
Select custom
Untick 1080i and 720p
Press X
Press X again
Select finish
Launch gamePlease note that you need a 1080p HDTV in the 40″ range and preferably connected via HDMI.
There’s a video after the link.

any word on whether this improves the actual quality that much though?

Doesn’t this just mean the PS3 is upscaling from 640p to 1080p instead of the TV?

If you’ve got a 1080p TV then the output you are watching is always 1080p – it’s just where the upscaling is done. It has 1080 pixels down the side, it can’t just display 720p magically.
So if the PS3 chucks a 720p signal at it then the TV upscales to 1080p so it can display it. If the PS3 chucks a 1080p signal at it then the TV just displays the signal.

This doesn’t change the native resolution… it just means the PS3 is upscaling instead of your TV.

But the PS3 can’t upscale, it doesn’t have the tech…(confused)

morriss: It’s already scaling from 630p to 720p. This is no different.

Oh apparently it does – it’s just not normally accessible to the devs or as good as the 360 one.

So why don’t 720p games scale to 1080i psycho?

Games that are 720p only: EA games, Motorstorm, Resitance etc. don’t scale to 1080i, they downscale to 576 or 480p because the PS3 doesn’t have an onboard scaler. The software itself has to support 1080i for it to happen.
