NTSC GTA IV code torrented, on Usenet
Kotaku‘s reporting that within 24 hours of GTA IV PAL code being leaked, NTSC versions are showing up all over those naughty torrent sites.
Although you need a modded Xbox or dev kit to play them, it hasn’t stopped nearly 20,000 of you trying to get hold of a copy.
Just had a quick look and there’s an NTSC version on Usenet as well.
Rockstar will be pleased.

Given the way they’re going after anyone who even posts footage of the game, I can’t see these torrents lasting long!

Not sure if there’s anything they can do about the Usenet posts, though.

I hope that some of the people stealing it are stupid enough to go online with it.

Just a question for anyone who can answer it:
How is it possible to crack a game before its release? I.e. where are they getting the source code from and how are they manipulating it so that it can be used?

They don’t need the source code, they just need a copy of the retail (or promo) disc and make an image of it. Usually they’re sourced from shops or from duplication plants by people who work there. There’s no ‘cracking’ involved, it’s simply a case of find disc, take disc, copy disc, upload image. Done. No rocket science involved.
