LittleBigPlanet will be “the most important game ever”, says source

Word from a SCEE press tour for LittleBigPlanet this week says Media Molecule has come up with something very special indeed in LittleBigPlanet.

“It’s going to be the most important game ever,” said an attendee. “It’s just astonishing. ”

The press was given two hours hands-on with the PS3 game, including full access to single-player, the level editor and “everything else”.

Our source says the code was still fairly flaky and crashed multiple times during the session – the developer recently said it was entering the alpha stage of development – but that the game itself was looking robust.

“I think it’s literally bug-stomping now,” said our man. “The game is astoundingly smooth.”

LittleBigPlanet has no fixed date at the moment aside from “September”.

/still doesn’t really get the appeal

Our chap there is rather excited, to say the least.

    The most important game *ever*?

I’m not entirely convinced of that. :-)

It should have an afterword that says “if you’re not a lazy bast!”

Basically, if you’re into user-generated content it’ll be one of the most important games of the year. But I have a sneaking suspicion that 90% of PS3 owners won’t be interested in making their own stuff with LBP, will play the “game” part of it and get horribly disillusioned.

I reckon it’s going to be ace. I can’t wait to start tinkering with the tools and making daft stuff.

    Excitable chap (steady!) yesterday

Sounds as though it takes all those “indie” ethics and puts them into a truly pro product that appeals to everyone. Everyone I know that’s seen it is beyond enthusiastic.

  7. Zumi said:

I doubt it’ll be the most important game ever, but it could have huge implications for user content, and bring it forward in a way that hasn’t been seen before.

However, I expect Sony to make a total cock-up of it.

Maybe it runs Folding@Home in the background so while you play you help cure diseases, that’d make it fairly important.

If it doesn’t I’d say it’s about as important as any other game and that’s not very.

He does know about that little game EA are doing called Spore, right?

I hope this becomes a smash hit. I hope loads of people does loads of great levels that others can download for free. I hope this idea is then expanded upon and put to use in a game that I would like to play.

Nothing I’ve seen about LBP platforming has me excited. The idea however. Like some March of the Minis deluxe. Yes please.

I’m rubbish at the user generated content thing. I tried making my own Tony Hawks skate parks and they were shit – just a ramp in a big empty warehouse. I want game designers to do that sort of thing for me.

  12. patlike said:

I’ve never made a game level. People used to make Quake levels in the office. They were always shit.

People will make better levels than the designers could ever dream of. 99% of it will be utter shit, but once you filter the crap, there’ll be some absolute gold there.

Oh Christ, no! No no no! I hates that game.

  15. Tonka said:

You FUD monger and Propaghandi. How much do they pay you?

  16. Blerk said:

    I like Mario Kart. Sometimes.

  17. grandmaster said:

Any chance the source could tell us why it’s going to be the most important game ever?

  18. Blerk said:

Because Sony do the bestest free lunches and hookers.

  19. patlike said:

He just reckons the openness of it and the was it “just works” is a revelation. He sounded pretty much blown away.

  20. Blerk said:

When’s the NDA up on this latest showing, then?

  21. patlike said:

It was a print thing from the sound of it, so I reckon it might be a good month before we see anything from it yet.

  22. Blerk said:

Gah! Stupid print! Get with the times, grandads!

  23. patlike said:

They’ll all pay for their crimes in the end, Blerk. All of them.

  24. Daniel Plainview said:

Maybe some sony devs will build levels (Insomniac anyone?).

There are some talented people out there with time on their hands I can see some good stuff coming out of this (along with the mounds of utter shit), I’m already sold on this game.

  25. Blerk said:

Egads, don’t give people ideas! Imagine the advertising opportunities given that you can import your own textures and stuff.

  26. patlike said:

    Really? I’m so making a VG247 level.

  27. Blerk said:

Yeah, you can basically add anything you like and have it used as an in-game asset. That’s why that Microsoft guy was harping on about ‘cartoon cock n’ balls’ levels and stuff the other day. It’ll need a lot of moderating, no doubt.

  28. patlike said:

God. I keep wanting to go into town and buy a PS3 and order a 250Gb hard drive.

    *head on desk*

  29. Blerk said:

    Would your wife kill you?

  30. Tonka said:

Imagine the joys of playing a shitty 2D platformer on cartoon cocks…

Or the thrill of submitting that level you did with your ass capture from the PSEye…

Or the exhilaration of yet another “Thanks for yur submission. Rating pending. Please hold”

I have no problem waiting for this “game”

  31. patlike said:

Blerk: I’d probably get a rather stern look, yes. The one that says, “Our kitchen’s shit, Pat. What the fuck’s that?”

  32. Blerk said:

To which the correct answer is surely “a George Foreman grill, what’s it look like?” :-D
