Eidos on Doctor Who: "We are exploring a number of potential directions for future games"

Speaking to videogaming247, Doctor Who executive producer Pete Hickman has revealed that discussions with the BBC on future games based on the sci-fi franchise are in progress.

"We have an ongoing relationship with the BBC and are currently exploring a number of potential directions for future games," he said.

Eidos's Doctor Who game is a Top Trumps title slated for PC, DS and PS2. The title is based on the exploits of the most recent Doctor, David Tennant, but plans to include previous Time Lords could well come to fruition in the future.

"For this edition of the game we are focusing purely on David Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor," said Hickman. "We are considering plans to do something based on previous Doctors from both the new and classic series, so send in your requests for favourite Doctors and classic series monsters!"

Videogaming247: Even though Doctor Who has been translated into many languages, it's still a very "UK-centric" brand. Do you think the game will succeed globally?

Tom and Pete (we're not sure who answered which question): Absolutely! This is Top Trumps: Doctor Who, based on the classic game that can be enjoyed by all the family whether you are familiar with the Doctor or not.

We've taken the basic card game and added a whole tactical layer in the form of special cards and character abilities and also mini-games.

You can play as a either the doctor, or as one of his assistants or one of the classic monsters from the series.

It's great fun. Obviously it's targeted at the Dr Who fans but the game also stands on its own.

Is Tom Baker in it? Seriously, it's important.

Why a trading card game? One of our readers raised the point that Doctor Who doesn't lend itself naturally to any of the "action" genres: was the a factor behind your decision to go in this direction?

Not really. We were approached with the idea of doing video games based on the Top Trumps card game (which has been popular with kids for decades) so we took a look at what packs were available and decided that the marriage of two famous British brands would be the perfect way to launch a fantastic new range of games.
